Book Review: Chasing the Sun

*image from

Chasing the Sun initially had everything working against it for me. Labeled Christian fiction, set around the Civil War and set on a ranch, it didn’t seem like it was going to be my cup of tea. I was completely wrong.

Hannah Dandridge suddenly finds herself the head of the Texas ranch her father acquired due to the war. As she is learning the ropes, the son of the previous owners of the ranch, William Barnett returns to reclaim his property.  Hannah must decide the best course of action in order to provide for herself and her young siblings.  I wish the author had showed more details about ranch life during that time. At times I had a hard time connecting with the time period and feel as though more details about daily life would have helped. Hannah and William face a myriad of struggles as they sort out the ranch ownership, as well as their feelings towards each other. The story twists and turns seemingly with every page and you start to truly care about the characters.

If you are looking for an easy summer read with an engaging story, I would definitely pick Chasing the Sun up.

Bethany House Publishers provided me a copy of this book to review, but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations and thoughts while reading this novel.

Birthday Cold

The birthday cold is hanging on. It has now moved to my chest, so I am constantly out of breath and feel like an elephant is parked on me. Goodtimes.

Orion doesn't quite understand that mommy is sick. He keeps bringing his toys into the bedroom to try to lure me out of bed to play with him. I sat on the floor with our humidifier, Penny the Penguin, for awhile and he came and sat next to me breathing in the (cool mist) steam with me and watching Friday Night Lights.

I hate being sick, but that little face makes it SO much easier!

Happy 33rd Birthday to Me!

I unfortunately came down with a wicked cold so I'm spending most of my day in bed, but there have been some very bright moments to the day.

THREE bouquets of flowers
Breakfast in bed (iced peppermint coffee and Trader Joes chocolate french toast)
Reading 2 magazines outside on my chaise lounge in the sun with a warm breeze
My husband making all the meals today!
Listening to NJhusband and NJmother-in-law bake my birthday cake together
Godiva dark chocolate covered strawberries
a $100 gift card to Barnes and Noble!!!

and my favorite, a host of birthday greetings on Facebook, text messages, cards and greetings!

101 degree fever be damned! I'm sill a lucky lucky girl!

Waiting for Brown

NJhusband and I will be married 6 months on Saturday! The time has flown, though mostly in this period of unemployment for me it has been spent watching 12 seasons of Law and Order: SVU and Friday Night Lights on Netflix.

I digress. Anyway, after 6 months of waiting our wedding album was slated to arrive yesterday. Now, combine my unemployment and a fairly severe case of social anxiety and let me assure you that I rarely leave the house. Couple that with the fact that I am the proud owner of a very large, very vocal dog who loves to bark whenever anyone even approaches the front gate and I ask you, how on EARTH did I miss the 3:32pm UPS delivery yesterday? Suspiciously, there was also no notice left on the door, which leads me to believe that perhaps MAYBE since it was raining Mr. UPS decided not to leave the confines of his warm, dry truck and even try to deliver my wedding album and instead just claimed I wasn't home.

I can assure you I WAS HOME. My therapist can tell you I was home. The dog will tell you I was home. My Netflix account can confirm I was home!

Today I am camped out on the couch stalking the front door, attempting to beat the dog to the window whenever anyone wearing brown approaches the house.

I hope I'm "home" today.
