Marital Discord in the form of Roosters

I am one of those people who 99% of the time wakes up before my alarm. On the rare occasions my alarm does go off, it is a gradual wake alarm. It starts out very quiet and slowly gets louder. As I am a light sleeper, I usually hear it in it's quiet stage and immediately turn it off and get up. Once I've been awakened, I'm up.

My husband's alarm is roosters crowing at a singular (aka LOUD) volume. He is also a snooze button user, so it's multiple versions of roosters in pre-set intervals.

Guess who gets up first in the morning?

Even though I have TWO MORE hours to sleep, every morning I am awakened at 6am, 6:15 and occasionally 6:30am by the dulcet tones of roosters. Now that we are married, I'm slowly coming to the realization that this is not just roosters anymore, this is roosters for LIFE. I actually like the roosters the first time, it's the snooze mentality I just do not understand. Isn't it better to set your alarm for the actual time you NEED to get up and sleep straight through? I'm just not a snoozer and never will be, yet I have to accept the fact that I will forever get broken sleep and have dreams from 6-8am about living on a farm.
Are you and your husband on the same page about the "snooze"?

The Plague

The stuffy nose continues. As does loss of appetite, sneezing, itchy eyes and exhaustion.

It's all around FUN in the NJHousehold.

Though going to bed at 7:30pm....I could get used to that part.

Cold v. Allergies

One itchy watery eye
Stuffed up nose
sinus pressure

Sounds like allergies right? But who get allergies in December??! All the allergy meds I took did nothing, but finally found some minor relief with Advil Cold and Sinus, so now I have no idea what to call it other than "I can't breathe and I'm driving my new husband crazy"-itis. I literally JUST got over the Belize plague I had from falling in the ocean and swallowing the ocean water and now I have a col/flu/allergies? Seriously? At least this means I'll likely be healthy for Christmas.

In other Holiday-related news, I finished my shopping (got $51 worth of stuff at Target for $32 using coupons (whoo!) AND was super pleased Best Buy took the coupon I had for NJhusband's gift! I wasn't sure of their policy, but since I had it in my purse, I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask and they honored it. Total savings this weekend $21!

Newlywed Bliss-less

I'm feeling a bit defeated these days due to my recent layoff and the NJhousehold financial picture gets less clear each day. With congress not yet extending the unemployment legislation, my severance being undetermined and not knowing what our new "married" status will do to our income tax refund this year, there is a lot up in the air these days and it's hard to map out our future.

When we were dating and even through our engagement, we had fun talking about our future, goals, discussed names for future kids and puppies. The future seemed fun and bright. Now that we are married, it feels like all the lights went out, the switch is broken, you can't find an electrician and when you try to fix it yourself you get shocked. Our fun dog/house/kids plan is out the window and replaced with.....budgeting, spreadsheets and attempting to sell as much stuff as we can while we wait for answers, Congress and the IRS.

I expected to return from our honeymoon tanned, blissful and ready to start browsing real estate ads and Life laughed in the face of that plan.

The cliches can only comfort me for so long. "everything happens for a reason". "when one door closes another one opens" "everything is going to be ok". "we will get through this together".

The practical part of me knows it's all true and is thankful not to be single, health insurance-less and well...screwed and part of me feels guilty now that things that happen to me now affect someone else.

Whoever wrote those traditional "sickness/health, richer/poorer" vows REALLY knew what they were doing.

Unfulfilled Wishes

We had a lovely ice bucket on our wedding registry, but it was one of our unpurchased items. Last night, I found myself in need of something tall and wide to chill a bottle of bubbly in and I was coming up empty until I hit the holy grail. The blender attachment for our food processor/blender combo!

Thankfully Crate and Barrel has an amazing registry completion program, where you can buy registry items for up to a year at a discount. I think I may be going back and picking up that ice bucket after all.

As with many newlyweds, R and I are struggling with finding the best way to manage our (now) joint finances. Up until our marriage it was very much a "pay your own way" arrangement, but due to my recent job loss, our financial picture is much different and completely up in the air. I'm going to try out a few apps/sites and see if any of those work for us. We're kicking it old school the Excel way right now and it's just not working for me.

On my list to try are and and their respective apps. Any other recommendations?

Wedding Pic Preview

We got some teaser photos from our photographer today!

Check the rest out at

Caryn was my college roommate and having her there as our photographer was so special. I kept stealing people's cameras and trying to take HER picture because I wanted to make sure I got some pictures of her at the wedding too. Here is one we got with some friends of ours!

Waiting for wedding photos is one of the most excruciating parts of being a newlywed! The day goes by in such a blur, you can't wait to see photographic evidence of what happened. I'm on pins and needles now waiting for the rest.

Changing Things Up

I freshened things up a bit here to reflect my life as a newlywed. I'll be sharing my stories as I navigate a brand new marriage, an unplanned switch to being a stay at home wife and my quest to keep us on budget and free of debt.

Hop on the ride with me. It's gonna be a good one!

I feel like there is a void in the internet world. I love the blogs of the digital moms and my feeder is full of them, but I am a newlywed, not a mommy or even to the "trying" stage. Where are the newlywed blogs? Maybe I can't review kids products, but I could absolutely tell you where the best places to register for your wedding are and what the best "budgeting for 2" apps are. Based on the success of the Knot, I'm guessing there is an uptapped market here.

Any newlywed bloggers out there want to start a "tribe" with me?!
